In one minute

The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) assesses sexual function in women across six areas: desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain. It makes visible which area a difficulty with sexual health is concentrated in. Its purpose is not to make a diagnosis but to give a clearer sense of where support may help.

How it works in 3 steps

  1. You respond: You mark the items about your sexual function over the recent period.
  2. The areas separate out: The six domains of sexual function are read one by one.
  3. It is interpreted: The result is evaluated in the context of health and the relationship.

Who it informs

It is informative for people who are experiencing difficulties with sexual function and who want to understand which area those difficulties fall in.

When professional support helps

A scale never makes a diagnosis on its own. If your results worry you, or if symptoms are affecting your daily life, sleep, or relationships, planning an assessment session with a clinical psychologist is the healthiest next step. If symptoms are intense, seeking support without delay is recommended.

What does the FSFI measure?

Female sexual function is an area in which hormonal, bodily, emotional and relational factors all play a part together. By addressing these different dimensions separately, the FSFI helps you see in which area a difficulty is mainly located.

The result supports planning that brings together the assessment of physical causes with attention to psychological and relational factors, rather than looking at any one of these on its own.

How is it scored?

Items are scored for each area and summed; lower scores point to greater difficulty in the relevant domain. The interpretation is always made together with a holistic assessment.

What do the score bands mean?

The ranges below are a general frame. No band makes a diagnosis on its own; a result only becomes meaningful when a clinical psychologist interprets it alongside your life story.

ScoreGeneral interpretation
219Sexual dysfunction
2027Borderline range
2836Normal sexual function

Limitation: It is a self-report tool and a scale never makes a diagnosis on its own. Because difficulties with sexual function can also be linked to physical causes, a medical and psychological evaluation together is recommended.

Psychometrics and source

The FSFI (Rosen et al., 2000) is the most widely used measure of female sexual function internationally; its domain scales show high internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
