What Depression Can Look Like
Depression rarely announces itself as "sadness" alone. More often it is a slow flattening: mornings get harder, plans get cancelled, food and sleep lose their rhythm, and things that used to feel meaningful start to feel like admin. Common signs include:
Persistent low or empty mood
Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
Changes in sleep — too little or too much
Appetite or weight changes
Fatigue and low energy
Difficulty concentrating or deciding
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Withdrawing from people and plans
If several of these have been present most days for two weeks or more, an assessment is a sensible next step. Anxiety and low mood also frequently occur together — see our anxiety treatment page if worry is a major part of the picture.
How We Work: CBT and Behavioural Activation
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for depression works on two fronts at once. The behavioural front — behavioural activation — rebuilds the link between what you do and how you feel: small, planned, achievable activities scheduled deliberately, because motivation follows action in depression, not the other way round.
The cognitive front addresses the thinking style that depression installs: the harsh self-criticism, the filtering out of anything positive, the certainty that effort is pointless. In sessions we learn to catch these patterns, test them against evidence, and build more accurate and kinder ways of interpreting events.
The work is structured and measurable. We agree goals in the first sessions, review validated scales such as the PHQ-9 at regular intervals, and adjust the plan based on what the data and your experience are telling us. Depression work is part of our wider individual therapy practice; where long-standing patterns of self-criticism or unrelenting standards are involved, Schema Therapy elements can be integrated.
Low Mood Far From Home
Expat life in Antalya looks enviable from the outside — and that is exactly what makes low mood abroad so isolating. Saying "I am struggling" feels ungrateful when you live near the sea. Meanwhile the real risk factors stack up quietly: a thinner social network, remote work that blurs every boundary, distance from family, winters when the tourist infrastructure empties out.
Behavioural activation is particularly well suited to this situation, because it directly rebuilds structure, connection and meaningful activity — the exact things relocation tends to strip away. Our psychologists have lived the relocation experience themselves, and that understanding is part of the formulation from the first session.
When Should You Seek Help for Low Mood?
If low mood or loss of interest has lasted more than two weeks, if you have stopped doing things that used to matter to you, or if people around you have noticed a change, it is a reasonable time to start. You do not need to wait until things are severe — earlier support generally means shorter, easier work. Depression is one of the most treatable difficulties in psychology, and in the first meeting you receive a clear working plan shaped around what you actually need, in person in Şirinyalı or online.
Depression Treatment, Answered
How do I know if it is depression or just a difficult period?
Sadness that follows a hard event and gradually eases is a normal human response. Depression tends to be more persistent: low mood or loss of interest most of the day, most days, for two weeks or more, usually with changes in sleep, appetite, energy or concentration. If daily functioning is affected, an assessment is worthwhile.
When should I seek professional help for low mood?
If low mood has lasted more than two weeks, if you have stopped doing things that used to matter to you, or if people around you have noticed a change — those are reasonable thresholds. You do not need to wait until things are severe; earlier support generally means shorter, easier work.
