Growing Up Between Cultures Is Its Own Story
The children of international families in Antalya carry something extra: a school in one language, a home in another, friendships interrupted by moves, and an identity assembled across countries. Most thrive. But when a child starts struggling — refusing school, sleeping badly, exploding over small things, retreating into a screen — parents often face a hard question: is this normal adjustment, or something that needs support?
A psychologist who works with international families can tell the difference. Relocation grief, language fatigue and third-culture identity questions look different from clinical anxiety or a developmental difficulty, and they call for different responses. Our assessment takes your family's full context into account — the move, the school system, the languages at home — before any plan is made.
Just as importantly, your child can speak in the language of their feelings. Sessions run in English, in Turkish or in both, following the child's lead — because a teenager describing friendship trouble, or a seven-year-old telling a story through toys, should never have to translate themselves first.
What We Help With
School Adjustment & Relocation
New country, new school, new language. Support for children finding their feet after a move — friendships, belonging and confidence in an international classroom.
Anxiety & Worry
Separation anxiety, sleep-time fears, social worry and exam stress — worked on with age-adapted CBT and, for younger children, through play.
Behavioural Difficulties
Meltdowns, defiance, aggression or withdrawal. We look for the need behind the behaviour and give parents concrete tools that work at home.
Attention & Focus
Difficulty concentrating at school or with homework — with objective assessment available through the computer-based MOXO attention test.
Adolescent Identity & Mood
Low mood, identity questions, peer pressure and family friction in the teenage years — with confidentiality that keeps the teenager engaged.
Family Transitions
Divorce, bereavement, a new sibling or another relocation — helping children make sense of change at their own pace.
How Sessions Change With Age
Younger Children (approx. 4–10)
Play-based sessions are the core: toys, sandtray, drawing and story work let children express what they cannot yet say. Parents are actively involved, with clear guidance for home.
Older Children (approx. 10–13)
A blend of talking, creative work and age-adapted CBT — concrete tools for worry, friendship trouble and school stress, at an age caught between play and conversation.
Teenagers (approx. 13–18)
Sessions look more like adult therapy: collaborative, respectful of privacy and focused on what the teenager actually cares about — identity, mood, friendships, pressure and the future.
Parents Are Part of the Team
No child changes in a vacuum. Every process includes regular parent feedback sessions: what the work is focusing on, what progress looks like, and — most practically — what to do at home when the difficult moments come. With teenagers we protect the confidentiality of their sessions, while keeping you informed about direction and progress in a way your teenager can accept.
Child and adolescent work is led by Mısra İlksen Önder, MSc, with Berk Mete, MSc, GMBPsS also holding an Advanced Diploma in Child Psychology. Parents looking for their own support can explore individual therapy or family therapy.
When Should International Parents Seek Support?
If changes have lasted beyond a few months — refusing school, sleeping badly, intense worry, meltdowns or withdrawal after a move — an assessment is a sensible step. You do not need to wait for a crisis: early, age-appropriate support usually means shorter, gentler work. In the first meeting we take your family's full context into account — the relocation, the school system, the languages at home — and advise honestly on whether therapy makes sense and what the first steps would look like.
Child & Adolescent Therapy, Answered
When should international parents consider a child psychologist?
Consider an assessment when you notice sustained changes: sleep problems, sudden drops in school performance, intense worry, social withdrawal, frequent meltdowns, or regression after a move or family change. For families who have recently relocated, some turbulence is normal — but if difficulties persist beyond a few months or intensify, early support makes progress noticeably easier.
Is online therapy suitable for children and teenagers?
For teenagers, online sessions work very well — many prefer them. For children, in-person sessions are generally better for younger ages, while online can work from around age eight upwards in the right conditions. We advise honestly on the best format at assessment.
