What Is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) was developed by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s and is today one of the most widely practised psychotherapy approaches in the world. Its core principle is that our thoughts directly shape our emotions and behaviour — it is rarely events themselves that affect us, but the meanings we attach to them.

CBT's effectiveness has been demonstrated in thousands of scientific studies. It is recommended as a first-line approach for a wide range of psychological difficulties by the American Psychological Association (APA), the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

At Mete Psikoloji in Antalya, clinical psychologists with advanced CBT training offer an evidence-based, structured and goal-oriented course of therapy — fully in English. Every session is planned around your needs and aims to build concrete, usable skills.

How Does CBT Work?

CBT rests on a framework known as the "cognitive model". According to this model, much of our emotional distress stems from automatic thoughts and underlying core beliefs. In CBT, you and your psychologist work together to identify these thought patterns, question them and replace them with more workable alternatives.

The core components of CBT include:

Noticing and recording automatic thoughts

Identifying cognitive distortions (thinking errors)

Questioning thoughts against the actual evidence

Building alternative, balanced thinking patterns

Behavioural experiments and graded exposure

Strengthening practical coping skills

Between-session tasks to practise in real life

Developing relapse prevention strategies

In CBT the psychologist actively involves you in the process. Sessions are structured, and each one follows an agreed agenda. This structure keeps the work both efficient and measurable.

What Does CBT Help With?

CBT has the broadest evidence base in psychotherapy. Hundreds of randomised controlled trials have shown it to be effective for:

Depression and persistent low mood

Generalised anxiety disorder

Panic disorder and agoraphobia

Social anxiety disorder (social phobia)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Sleep difficulties (insomnia)

Anger management difficulties

Eating disorders

Chronic pain management

Research shows CBT to be as effective as medication for many presentations — and its benefits often persist after treatment ends, because the skills you learn keep protecting you long term.

What Does a Course of CBT Look Like?

At Mete Psikoloji, a course of CBT is carefully staged. Each phase builds on the last, and your active participation is central throughout.

Assessment & Case Formulation

The first one to two sessions are devoted to a thorough assessment. Your difficulties, history, triggers and maintaining factors are examined together, and a personalised case formulation is built from them.

Goal Setting

You and your psychologist agree concrete, measurable therapy goals together. These goals act as the compass for the whole course and let progress be tracked openly.

Active Therapy Phase

Each session lasts around 50 minutes and includes setting an agenda, reviewing the previous week, learning new techniques and planning between-session tasks.

Skill Transfer & Ending

As therapy progresses, sessions are spaced further apart. The aim is for the skills you have learned to transfer permanently into daily life. The course closes with a written relapse prevention plan.

CBT at Mete Psikoloji

Our CBT practice in Antalya follows international standards. Founding psychologist Berk Mete completed his BSc in Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London — in the country where much of CBT's modern service model was shaped — and is a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society (GMBPsS, #763717). Psychologist Mısra İlksen Önder completed 16 advanced CBT modules with Prof. Hakan Türkçapar and advanced clinical formation with Prof. Ebru Şalcıoğlu (DATEM).

Throughout therapy we use standardised measures to track your progress objectively. With tools such as the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), you and your psychologist review where you stand at every stage.

By design, CBT is a short-term therapy model. A course is usually completed within 12-20 sessions, though this is adapted to your situation and goals. Its structured, goal-oriented nature means most people notice concrete progress relatively quickly.

We can use CBT on its own or, where useful, in an integrated way alongside other evidence-based approaches such as Schema Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

CBT and Other Therapy Approaches

CBT is a pioneering approach in psychotherapy, and it forms the foundation of many modern methods. So-called third-wave cognitive behavioural therapies — ACT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) — are all built on CBT's principles.

Schema Therapy is an extension of CBT that focuses on early life experiences and aims for deeper structural change. For chronic, repeating difficulties, CBT and Schema Therapy can be used together.

Working out which approach fits you best takes a proper assessment. Our clinical psychologists evaluate your situation in the first meeting and build the plan most suited to you.

FAQ

CBT: frequently asked questions

What is CBT in plain terms?

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy built on one core insight: it is rarely events themselves that keep us stuck, but the meanings we attach to them and the behaviours those meanings drive. CBT teaches you to notice, test and change unhelpful thought patterns and avoidance behaviours — with measurable goals and a defined timeframe.

What does CBT help with?

CBT has the strongest evidence base in psychotherapy. Bodies such as NICE in the UK and the American Psychological Association recommend it as a first-line approach for depression, generalised anxiety, panic, social anxiety, OCD, post-traumatic stress, sleep difficulties and phobias, among others.

How is CBT different from other talking therapies?

CBT is symptom-focused, structured and time-limited. Rather than concentrating on the distant past, it works with the thought and behaviour patterns maintaining the problem now. Approaches such as ACT and Schema Therapy can be seen as extensions built on CBT's foundations.
