Conners Parent Rating Scale
Assesses ADHD symptoms and related difficulties through parent observations.
In one minute
How it works in 3 steps
- The parent completes it: Items reflecting the child's recent behaviour are marked.
- A profile emerges: Areas of attention, activity, and behaviour are distinguished.
- A professional interprets it: The result is combined with a professional assessment.

What does the CPRS-R measure?
The scale assesses the child's observed behaviour at school and at home from the parent's perspective. It considers areas such as attention span, activity level, impulsivity, and behavioural problems together.
The results do not provide a diagnosis on their own; they gain meaning when combined with teacher information and a professional assessment. A raised area means the topic is worth a professional assessment, not that a label applies.
How is it scored?
The items are scored on a rating scale and distributed across areas; raised areas bring a more detailed assessment onto the agenda.

What do the score bands mean?
The ranges below are a general frame. No band makes a diagnosis on its own; a result only becomes meaningful when a clinical psychologist interprets it alongside your life story.
| Score | General interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0–59 | Normal range |
| 60–65 | Mild concern |
| 66–240 | Marked difficulty |
Limitation: It is a screening tool based on parent observation; it never makes a diagnosis on its own. An ADHD assessment requires multiple sources of information and a professional evaluation.
Psychometrics and source
The internal consistency of the Conners scales is generally reported in the .80-.90 range across subscales; their validity in ADHD assessment is well supported by widespread use.
Original source: Conners, C.K. (1997).
